What is a Citizen’s Police Academy?
A Citizen’s Police Academy is a multi-faceted educational program designed to provide members of our community with the opportunity to gain specific knowledge about the philosophy and processes of the Tuscaloosa Police Department, as well as valuable insight into the field of law enforcement. CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED TO 20 STUDENTS.
Why is it offered?
The objective of the Citizen’s Police Academy is to develop a positive relationship between the Police Department and a cross-section of the Tuscaloosa Community through a carefully tailored educational curriculum.
The Citizen’s Academy will create a growing cadre of responsible, well-informed citizens who will influence public opinion about law enforcement procedures and services. Graduates of the Academy will depart with an increased awareness and understanding of the problems and challenges facing law enforcement today and the Tuscaloosa Police Department’s commitment to the philosophy of Community Policing. An informed community is more effectively involved in crime prevention and stimulates a dynamic citizen-police partnership in their neighborhoods. Upon completion of the academy, students will be asked to fill out a survey. This survey will be used to improve the Citizen’s Police Academy for future classes.
When is it?
The class typically runs every Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. in February and March. One Saturday class at the police firing range will also be required. This class will include the Tuscaloosa Special Response Team, Helicopter Unit, K-9 Division and Bomb Squad. Participants can only miss one class. Any participant missing more than one class will be dropped from the class. A four-hour ride along with a Tuscaloosa Police patrol officer will also be required. A ride along will be necessary to better understand how the Tuscaloosa Police Department operates. Formal graduation is typically conducted in April.
Who can attend?
The Citizen’s Academy is open to all residents of the City of Tuscaloosa. Business owners that hold a Tuscaloosa City Business License may also attend. Class numbers are limited. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older.
